Bali

Rice terraces stepping down the hillsides, temple gates against the surf, and mornings that start slow no matter where you’re staying.

Split the week: highlands, then coast

Ubud gets you the rice terraces, the rainforest, and a slower rhythm — mornings at a warung, afternoons wandering past working temples that aren’t staged for tourists. Give it three or four nights before you move toward the water.

Uluwatu and Canggu handle the coast half: cliffside temples at sunset, better surf than Bali gets credit for, and a beach-club scene that’s easy to opt out of if it’s not your speed. The drive between the two regions takes under two hours.

What the week actually looks like

Start early — the Tegallalang terraces and the popular temples are genuinely peaceful before nine, and unrecognizable after ten. Midday is for staying out of the sun: a long lunch, a spa afternoon, or just a nap before the heat breaks.

Evenings in Uluwatu belong to the cliffs — the Kecak fire dance at sunset is touristy and still worth it once. In Ubud, evenings are quieter: a family-run warung, gamelan music drifting from somewhere down the street.

Worth building your trip around

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Go at seven in the morning, before the tour buses, and the famous green stairsteps are yours alone.

Uluwatu Temple

Perched on a two-hundred-foot cliff above the surf, with a sunset show worth planning your evening around.

A family warung in Ubud

Skip the tourist-menu cafes for a plate of nasi campur at a place with plastic chairs and no sign.

More of Asia & the Pacific, waiting to be planned.
