Australia
Reef, outback, and coastline with room to disappear into — a country big enough that no two trips look the same.
Best time to visit
May – October
Fly into
Sydney (SYD) or Cairns (CNS)
Good for
Reef, road trips, wildlife
Suggested stay
12–16 nights
Pick a coast, not the whole continent
Australia is bigger than most first-timers plan for, and trying to string Sydney, the reef, and the outback into one loop usually means three exhausting days in each. Anchor the trip instead — the east coast from Sydney to Cairns covers beaches, rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef without the long-haul internal flights.
If red-dirt country is the priority, fly into Alice Springs and build the trip around Uluru and the Red Centre instead, then treat the coast as a separate future trip.
What the week actually looks like
On the reef, mornings are for the water — a boat out to the outer reef from Cairns or Port Douglas beats the closer, more crowded inner sections. Afternoons slow into rainforest walks in the Daintree or just recovering on the sand.
In the Red Centre, plan around the light: sunrise and sunset at Uluru, when the rock changes color, with the hot middle of the day reserved for shade, a swim, or the drive between sites.
Worth building your trip around
Great Barrier Reef, outer sections
A day boat from Port Douglas reaches clearer, healthier coral than the crowded inner reef closer to Cairns.
Uluru at sunset
The rock shifts through red, orange, and violet in under an hour — worth planning your whole evening around.
Daintree Rainforest
The oldest tropical rainforest on earth, reaching right down to the reef along Queensland’s coast.
