Caribbean

Jamaica

Cliffside sunsets in Negril, jerk smoke drifting over Ocho Rios, and a coastline that rewards slowing down.

Best time to visit

December – April

Fly into

Montego Bay (MBJ)

Good for

Beach, food, nightlife

Suggested stay

5–7 nights

Skip the resort strip, keep the beach

Montego Bay and Negril get the crowds, and for good reason — the water really is that color. But the island opens up once you get twenty minutes off the main strip: roadside jerk pits, cliff-diving spots locals still use, and fishing villages that haven’t changed their pace in decades.

Ocho Rios makes a good home base if you want a mix of reef, waterfalls, and easy day trips. Negril is the pick for cliffs and sunsets. Either way, rent a car or hire a driver for a day — the best meals on this island are rarely the ones closest to your hotel.

What the week actually looks like

Mornings are for the water — snorkeling at Montego Bay Marine Park or a quiet swim before the beach fills in. Afternoons slow down: a plate of jerk chicken and festival from a roadside pit, a nap, maybe a walk through a botanical garden if you’re near Ocho Rios.

Evenings belong to the cliffs. Negril’s sunset crowd at the cliff bars is a real ritual, not a tourist trap — locals show up for it too. Bring cash for the smaller spots; card readers are hit or miss outside the resorts.

Worth building your trip around

Rick’s Cafe, Negril

The cliff-diving and sunset spot everyone means when they say “Negril.” Go for the show, stay for the view.

Dunn’s River Falls

Touristy, yes — but climbing a waterfall barefoot is still worth the crowd if you go early.

Scotchies, Montego Bay

The jerk pit locals actually recommend when you ask where they’d eat, not where the guidebooks send you.

More of the Caribbean, waiting to be planned.
